General Statement of Duties: 

The Registered Nurse Team Lead Inpatient coordinates the activities of nursing and non-nursing personnel, while working under the direction of the Clinical Manager and Inpatient Director. The Team Lead assists with procedures, treatments, and nursing care as needed.

Essential Duties:

  1. Directs and assists Inpatient personnel. Recommends ways for staff to use down time productively. Assists in problem resolution and helping personnel to understand available resources. Maintains knowledge of hospital policy and ensures that staff compliance with all policies and procedures.
  2. Staffing Responsibilities – Places patient wellbeing over unit routine or personal preferences. Recognizes the need for changes in patient assignment and implements changes in a timely manner. Informs management when problems in staffing arise. Coordinates breaks and lunches while providing adequate patient coverage in staff absence. Collaborates on schedules for all staff and identifies/notifies staff of any changes.
  3. Maintains effective communication between management and personnel.
  4. Monitors overall patient acuity level on the unit and reports any unusual occurrences or circumstances to appropriate Manager or healthcare worker.
  5. Continuing Education – Participates in annual and on-going training, education, and development activities to improve knowledge and skills. Attends leadership specific learning opportunities to enhance skills. Maintains knowledge of equipment and supplies.
  6. Assists with orientation and training. Provides input into the evaluation of staff with reference to their improvement in techniques or performance.
  7. Monitors inventory of supplies, medications, and equipment, and reports insufficiencies to the appropriate Manager.
  8. Patient Education/Discharge Planning – Distributes education materials as appropriate. Completes assigned tasks that facilitate discharge planning.
  9. Retrieves and submits data for Quality Assurance and Risk Management and other compliance needs as requested.
  10. Direct Patient Care – Completes treatments and procedures as ordered and/or indicated. Provides care related to personal hygiene, activities of daily living, and comfort measures as indicated. Prepares and administers medication and treatments as prescribed by Physicians.
  11. Documentation – Documents all patient care activities in accordance with the standard of care as well as changes in the patient’s condition.
  12. Patient Assessment – Performs patient’s assessment through observation and communicates pertinent patient information/data to appropriate care providers in a timely manner. Requires constant mental alertness to observe signs and symptoms of patient conditions and side effects of medications or technical procedures and respond appropriately to ensure optimal patient care.
  13. Participates in service recovery.

Job Requirements


  • Associate's Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor's degree preferred - must be graduated from a nursing program accredited through the NLN or CCNE
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse with the State of Indiana
  • CPR and ACLS certification
  • 2-4 years recent experience in a hospital setting on a medical-surgical unit required; 4-6 preferred
