General Statement of Duties:

The HIM Manager is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of the HIM department, and coordinates health information services across the organization. The Manager reviews processes and identifies areas for improvement. The position is the point of contact for OrthoIndy staff and patients with health information question.

Essential Duties:

  1. Responsible for the daily operation of the HIM Department. Participated in the daily functions for the department. Identifies and resolves operations issues. Provides project management leadership for HIM initiatives and assists with interdisciplinary team projects as needed to provide health information feedback.
  2. Serves as a liaison between HIM and other corporate departments and Physicians, ensuring that systems are accessible and in accordance with the needs of the organization. Serves as subject matter expert for department staff, Physicians, and administration for obtaining information or clarification on documentation standards, state and federal law and regulatory requirements relating to HIM. Serves as liaison for health information questions received from agencies, staff, and patients.
  3. Employee Management - Supervises, coordinates, and develops personnel engaged in analyzing, compiling, indexing and filing of health information records of patients, arranges for training of department personnel in these areas based on need. Monitors key performance indicators on a routine basis. Ensures job descriptions are developed and maintained. Implements and adapts staffing plans. Interviews, hires, and assists with training and orientation of new employees.
  4. Participates in utilization review, risk management, revenue cycle management, and other quality improvement projects. Leads involvement on project improvement initiatives for the Health Information Management department. Works closely with ROI vendor to ensure patient satisfaction and continuity of care.
  5. Performs and provides analysis and reporting of key performance indicators, and other reports. Analyzes operational and financial events and develops solutions in response to company needs. Assists with internal and external audits and requests for data to ensure the quality, timeliness, availability, adequate storage and preservation of patient medical records.
  6. Directs and oversees all policies and procedures related to healthcare information management. Develops policies and procedures on release of information, confidentiality, information security, information storage, retrieval, and records retention. Ensures compliance with accreditation, legal, and other regulatory requirements, as well as, state, federal, and other laws relating to privacy, security, and medical record completion.
  7. Works with Physicians to improve the quality of all hospital documentation. Educates medial staff, administration, and other staff on the optimal use and documentation of health information.
  8. Assists in preparing annual departmental budget. Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines. Monitors and justifies expenses exceeding budget targets.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information or related field required
  • RHIT certification required; RHIA certification preferred
  • 4-6 years of HIM management experience required; 6-8 preferred
  • Previous management experience strongly preferred
