General Statement of Duties: 

The Clinical Manager Surgery is responsible and accountable for coordinating and supervising the nursing care provided to patients having operative and other invasive procedures. The Manager ensures that effective nursing services are provided and quality standards are met. The function of the Clinical Manager Surgery is to develop and maintain an environment that supports the professional nurse and ancillary staff.

Essential Duties:

  1. Ensures staff members provide safe patient care in the area managed and reports any unusual occurrences, circumstances or discrepancies. Operationally and fiscally manages the department. Assess and responds appropriately to organizational culture.
  2. Ensures staff compliance with organizational policies, accreditation standards, governmental regulations, and professional standards of care.
  3. Monitors patient medical records for completeness. Prepares reports as directed. Retrieves data and prepares reports for Quality Assurance and Risk Management as needed. Maintains privacy of all appropriate information.
  4. Manages the schedules for all staff and identifies and notifies staff of any changes. Steps into staffing when needed. Responsible for assessing the need for overtime. Coordinates all necessary breaks and vacations so that adequate coverage is maintained during staff absence. Intermittently staffs to maintain clinical skills and to role model appropriate behaviors and be visible to staff and physicians.
  5. Demonstrates effective communication, consultation, negotiation, and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team. Establishes and maintains effective staff, patient, and Physician relationships and communication.
  6. Responsible for interviewing and hiring. Implements corrective actions and conducts performance reviews. Effectively addresses personnel issues by providing guidance, support, and constructive feedback to the staff.
  7. Aids the clinical educator in developing education programs designed to assist the staff with new and/or continued learning. Directs and assists personnel and assists in their orientation and training. Ensures that educational resources are available for perioperative team education and hold staff members accountable for attendance.
  8. Uses effective conflict resolution techniques. Assists staff in problem resolution and identifying appropriate source of referral. Serves as a role model and resource for staff.
  9. Incorporates and assists staff members with assimilating evidence-based knowledge into decisions for the provision of safe patient care. Assists staff members in evaluating practice and creating strategies for further improvement.
  10. Ensures availability and operation of necessary equipment and supplies for patient care.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required
  • Licensed in the State of Indiana as a Registered Nurse required
  • BLS, ACLS, and CNOR certifications required
  • 4-6 years of Operating Room Registered Nurse experience required; 6-8 years of experience preferred
  • 1-2 years of supervising experience preferred
