Position Summary:

All clinical care provided by the Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) will be within the scope of the duties assigned by the supervising OrthoIndy Physician. The Advanced Practice Provider must be detail oriented, self-motivated to co-manage a busy orthopedic trauma practice at St Vincent Level I Trauma Center and OrthoIndy Hospital. Daily duties include in-patient and out-patient practice management between these two facilities (within 3 miles of each other). The duties include, but are not limited to, pre and post-op patient management, one whole day, and two half days of office weekly, obtaining H&P, clinical exam, ordering and interpreting radiological and laboratory studies, EMR documentation at both facilities, responding to patient's phone messages (medication refills, questions regarding patient care plan), daily in-patient rounds and coordination and communication with all consulting services. The opportunity to participate in the OR is available, but not required. There are no call duties, no nights, and no scheduled weekends. Non weekend Holiday coverage is very limited. OrthoIndy employs a separate team of Advanced Practice Provider who covers and manages in-house call.

Essential Duties:

  1. Helps plan and implement care of doctor’s patients, including entering orders into the patient record that are verbal orders or part of standing orders or protocols approved by the supervising physician. Provides direct patient treatment, including but not limited to: assists with simple wound care and repair, joint injection and aspiration, administration of local anesthetic and digital blocks, joint and fracture reduction, and application of braces, splints, and other DME and soft goods.
  2. Orders radiologic and laboratory tests and studies as necessary to complete history and physical examinations.
  3. Assesses patients and assesses normal and abnormal findings obtained from history and physical examination as well as radiology and ancillary studies.
  4. Plans and implements care of patients, including; EMR documentation, ordering additional studies, communicates with supervising Physician and additional staff, and prescribing appropriate medications.
  5. Helps to counsel individuals and families about their health related issues. Communicates individualized teaching plans to patients based on their needs.
  6. Attends or performs rounds to assist Physician when possible.
  7. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.

Job Requirements


  • NCCPA or AANP certification required
  • Indiana PA Committee or Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses certification required
  • BLS certification required
  • ACLS certification required
  • 1-2 years of Advanced Practice Provider experience preferred
